ROOT SHOOT MALTING IS A 5TH-GENERATION FAMILY FARM AND MALTHOUSE THAT SUPPLIES BARLEY, WHEAT, RYE AND NON-GMO CORN TO CRAFT BREWERS AND DISTILLERS

Founded by Todd and Steve Olander in 2016, Root Shoot Malting is deeply grounded and invested in Northern Colorado.

We carefully cultivated the operation to specialize in providing the highest quality of local grain and malt to the craft brewing and distilling industries.

As 5th-generation Loveland, Colorado farmers, respect for the heritage and land, and a deep-rooted understanding of the region’s agriculture are in our blood. Pride and family values are an essential part of the process at Root Shoot Malting. We take what we learned from the farmers, and family, before us, while using today’s most innovative agricultural equipment, to make the least impact on the Earth and keep the land healthy for the next generation of Root Shoot Farmers.

Located on the Olander Farms’ 112-acre farm, and approximately 1500 leased acres, Root Shoot is working to ensure that farmland remains available to grow grain for the beers and spirits of tomorrow.

We believe farmers are stewards of the land — taking responsibility for the soil, nourishing our communities, and proving that there is a better way to do agriculture. We value fresh water, local food, craft beverages (a lot), mountain views, thriving wildlife, and a healthy economy. It’s an honor and privilege to do what we do and every day we celebrate those who support us from the craft brewers and spirits purveyors to the land stewards, and fermented beverage consumers far and wide.

Root Shoot Malting is in the unique position to control the entire malting process from seed variety and growth, to harvest and final kilning.

Beyond providing breweries and distilleries the ability to procure local, consistent, and high-quality craft products, we seek to create meaningful, collaborative relationships with our partners. We are committed to positioning ourselves as a leader in the nationally emerging craft malt industry and regenerative agriculture movement.


Advanced Craft Malting

Root Shoot Malting was the first craft malthouse in the United States to operate the Kaspar Schulz malting system.

Manufactured in Bamberg, Germany, our equipment is composed of a steeping vessel and germination-kiln combo drums that are capable of producing 30 tons of craft malt per week.

With this advanced technology, we are able to deliver incomparable malt flavor and the promise of high-quality consistency.

We offer fresh, unique, made-to-order malts that are truly local.

What began as an operation rooted in blood has grown into a greater family connected by shared passions, common visions, an unyielding commitment to doing things the right way, and of course, an insatiable thirst for delicious craft beverages. Through dark and cold winter mornings to sweltering dog days of summer, from unpredictable pandemics to annual supercells and tornado warnings, the Root Shoot crew has weathered it all, as one. We’re lucky to have each other, and it’s not cliché, but rather choice, that we consider our team a family.
